Number of NATO members 2023

As of 2023, there are 31 member states in NATO following the ascension of Finland on April 4, 2023. The western military alliance formed in the aftermath of World War Two, its founding members included Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. After eight stages of enlargement, the alliance has more than doubled in size, with the largest enlargement occuring in 2004, when the alliance welcomed seven new countries.
